These days it tends to be media that determines more of our gut reaction. Children can recite line after line from their favorite TV shows. Phrases from popular movies can change the vocabulary of a generation.
Oscar Wilde was born in the late 19th century so of course he had no experience with TV and movies. But no doubt he would cite the book as a more effective tool for changing our habits and gut reactions to something more pleasing.
Determine what kind of person you want to be. Study the lives of the men or women that you want to emulate. Find out what they read if you can, and then read from those books. Ask your mentor what they read. Then read, and re-read the books until they help you bring forth the things you desire.
