One can truly have a library of wisdom. Naturally, that library of books doesn’t do a man much good if
they sit on the shelf unread. One could acquire knowledge by talking to people, but the knowledge that can be gained from the people of the past can be obtained only in a book.

I’ve read such books, many of them. Books that have made me cry. Books that have made me laugh. Books that have made me smarter. Books that have propelled me to a deep depression. Books that have lifted me up. And books that have made me want to read more books.

Books not only carry a civilization - they alter a civilization. Look at how Uncle Tom’s Cabin altered a civilization. In fact, few other novels have altered a civilization as much. Henry James said the book was as “much less a book than a state of vision, of feeling and of consciousness.
